Not all homeowners will have the luxury of having a porch at their property, however, porches are a feature which can have many benefits and are relatively inexpensive to add.
Benefits of a porch:
Everyone wants extra space in their home. Porches are a great addition, creating space for hanging garments such as coats and hats and storing shoes.
This may not be your top priority when thinking of adding a porch to your property, but it’s certainly a benefit. A good quality upvc or composite door means intruders will probably think twice about having to enter two doors to get inside your house.
Improving energy efficiency
Porches are perfect for keeping those draughts from your front door, ultimately improving energy efficiency, keeping your home much warmer.
Adding value to your property
Done well and in keeping with your property, porches are a real asset. They can add value to a property, but this is not always the case. However, More often than not they will certainly improve the kerb appeal of your property and therefore make it more saleable.
Planning permission is not usually required
Adding a porch to any external door of your house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, provided: the ground floor area (measured externally) would not exceed three square metres, no part would be more than three metres above ground level (height needs to be measured in the same way as for a house extension) & no part of the porch would be within two metres of any boundary of the dwellinghouse and the highway.
